In export, Burgundy wines broke a new record in turnover in 2021: they exceed for the 3rd consecutive year the billion euros. Burgundy wines sold abroad generated €1.32 billion in turnover in 2021. That's a 28% jump compared to 2020. Behind this figure, nearly 105 million 75cl bottle equivalents are exported. This result is also higher than in 2019, before Covid. American success All the main export markets are growing and "in particular the United States, with an increase of 45%", says the Fneb, Federation of breeders traders of Greater Burgundy. For the president of this institution, Albéric Bichot, the reasons for these good commercial results are "the lifting of restrictions related to the pandemic and the return of customers to the café-hotel-restaurant circuit, the suspension of the trade conflict between Europe and the United States and the lifting of taxes, and finally, the ever-growing attraction for Burgundy wines, the most accomplished embodiment of local viticulture". Challenges ahead These results are part of a fundamental trend: in less than ten years, Burgundy wines have almost doubled their turnover. Despite these encouraging figures, the challenges that await burgundy wine are numerous. After several vintages with limited yield, the region may have difficulty meeting demand. "The results of 2022 will depend on Burgundy's ability to supply the markets and meet the many societal expectations of consumers, not to mention covid-19, which is returning in waves, and the geopolitical context, which amplifies inflation and its consequences," says the interprofession.
