The 62nd Hospices de Nuits-Saint-Georges Wine Sale, which took place this Sunday March 12 at the Château du Clos de Vougeot, kept its promises with an exceptional result of €3,603,000 (hammer price), i.e. +44.93% compared to the 2022 sale.

Traditionally held at the Château du Clos de Vougeot, the 62nd Hospices de Nuits Wine Sale took place this Sunday, March 12 and was hosted by auctioneer Hugues Cortot and wine expert Aymeric de Clouet. The results are part of the growth dynamic of this sale for 4 years.

Record smashed for the only white

More generous than in previous years, the 2022 harvest made it possible to offer 160 pieces of wine for sale this year, divided into 19 different cuvées, representing the diversity and authenticity of each cru. The result of the 62nd sale of the Hospices de Nuits amounts to €3,603,000 (hammer price), i.e. +45% compared to 2022 (109 pieces on sale). The sale of the 18 red wine cuvées made it possible to capitalize €3,504,000 (hammer price), i.e. +44.32% compared to 2022. The sale of the only white wine cuvée (Nuits-Saint-Georges 1er Cru Les Terres Blanches, the Pierre de Pême cuvée generated €99,000 (hammer price), i.e. +70.69% compared to the 61st edition.

Given the large 2022 harvest compared to previous years, the average price of red and white wine, amounting to €22,518.75 (hammer price), is down 1.27% compared to 2022 results. The average price of red wines, representing 18 out of 19 cuvées on sale, saw a stable result of €22,318.47 (hammer price), i.e. -0.73% compared to 2022. The cuvée which sold the most expensive at the 62nd Hospices de Nuits-Saint-Georges wine sale is a Nuits-Saint-Georges 1er Cru Les Saint-Georges Cuvée Georges Faiveley at the price of €55,000 against €52,000 the last year. For the first time put on sale, the cuvée Nuits-Saint-Georges 1er Cru Les Saint-Georges “Old Vines” Cuvée Hugues Perdrizet, resulting from a rigorous selection of the oldest vines of the domain and paying homage to the first donor of the Domaine des Hospices de Nuits has reached the promising amount of €40,000.

Charity coin sparks excitement

The reputation of the Hospices de Nuits-Saint-Georges Wine Auction continues to grow, with recognition of the quality of the wines offered thanks to the work carried out by the manager Jean-Marc Moron. Sunny and opulent, the 2022 harvest has won over buyers looking for a perfectly balanced vintage with lovely freshness, expressing classic Burgundy.

The “charity coin”, known as Cuvée des Bienfaiteurs, resulting from the blending of the estate’s nine Nuits-Saint-Georges Premiers Crus and sold by subscription, raised the record sum of €64,580 for the benefit of the Blouses Roses which Its mission is to bring “wellness” to fragile people (children, adults and the elderly) in hospitals and retirement homes.

With the benefits of the charity play, the association wishes to set up two projects for children with disabilities, namely animal mediation sessions and music therapy. Particularly committed to the association, actress Constance Dollé, who represented it at the Sale, was delighted with this result: “I am very honored that the Blouses Roses asked me to sponsor this event this year. I see in my support a fair return, a way of thanking them infinitely”.

This year is no exception to the rule: the winter, abnormally mild and not very rainy, heralds a dry spring and then a dry summer. A phenomenon that worries winegrowers. What about Burgundy?

If the rains of this month of March were eagerly awaited, they will not be sufficient. Indeed, France is experiencing an extraordinary drought at the end of winter. The main indicator: the level of groundwater. The specialized site info-echeresse.fr indicates that in the country, a quarter of them are currently at an exceptionally low level. As in the Pyrénées-Orientales, where some winegrowers have gone so far as to ask the diocese for a mass to make the rain fall. Unfortunately, among these very water-deficient areas there is also wine-growing Burgundy.

The fear of a summer drought

If spring should unfold in a serene way for the vine, it is in summer that the lack of water should be felt. Meteorologist Serge Zaka, renowned for his predictions in the agricultural community, indicates on twitter that the drought could again do damage this summer
2023.

— Dr. Serge Zaka (Dr. Zarge) (@SergeZaka) March 14, 2023

Thus, the vintage could undergo the same phenomena as 2022, 2020, 2011 or even 2003: an extremely dry summer, at the origin of wines that are certainly very good, but of increased mortality among the vines, as well as very poor yields. , undermining the cash flow of winegrowers.

2022 hottest year on record
“2022 is the hottest year on record since the turn of the 20th century. It is also the driest and sunniest”, warns the BIVB (Bureau interprofessionnel des Vins de Bourgogne) in its latest summary. Thus, over the period from April to September, the interprofession notes “+ 1.4°C on temperatures, – 16% on precipitation and + 285 hours of sunshine” compared to normal.

In Burgundy, the wine appellations have their hierarchy, and the Inao (National Institute of Origin and Quality) distributes “promotions” from time to time. Which parcels are affected? How long ? All the answers in this article.

Very soon: 1er crus in Pouilly-Loché and Pouilly-Vinzelles

After the recognition of 1er crus in Pouilly-Fuissé in 2020 – a first in the Mâconnais – the very similar appellations, Pouilly-Loché and Pouilly-Vinzelles must also see their most beautiful plots benefit from this prestigious classification. The files are well advanced, but we will have to wait for the 2024 vintage to see them succeed. A matter of administrative mille-feuille…

In the medium term: premier crus in Saint-Véran and Marsannay

Here are two other solid files, but a little less advanced: the recognition of premier crus in Saint-Véran (Mâconnais), as well as in Marsannay (Côte de Nuits). The applications are on the right track, but there is no hope of a result before 2025.

Maybe one day: Dijon, Lugny and new grands crus

Dijon wants its own complementary denomination within the Burgundy appellation. Some wines from the metropolis would therefore be called “Burgundy Côte Dijonnaise” or lieu de Bourgogne. We remain at the first level of appellation, but with a narrower geographical area and a bit of additional prestige. The request, made at the end of 2022, is only in its infancy.
In addition, the village of Lugny, which benefits from a regional level appellation in Mâconnaise, is asking to be upgraded to the “village” level, in the same way as Pouilly-Fuissé or Viré-Clessé. Again, it will take a few years.
Finally, at the top of the hierarchy, some first growths of Côte d’Or would be seen as great growths. We think of the Rugiens in Pommard, or the Saint-Georges in Nuits-Saint-Georges. The quality and the reputation are there. But beware: we are touching here on a politically as well as economically sensitive subject. It will take patience…

As every year, the charity event was mainly animated by a dozen bidders.

From auction records to auction records, the wines of the Hospices de Beaune are becoming more inaccessible each year. The 2022 edition is no exception to the rule, and has taken a new step by beating all historical records. At €39,000 the average price per piece (barrel), or around €130 per bottle of primeur wine, who can still afford to bid at this charity auction, the oldest in the world?

The biggest buyers are essentially Burgundians. As every year for more than 10 years, it is the Albert Bichot house that wins the prize, with 109 pieces and nearly 5 million euros in purchases. A tradition for this Beaune trader, privileged partner of the Hospices de Beaune. Some of these cuvées will be integrated into its range, others will be resold in bulk to major customers around the world.

Another 18 to 24 months of aging
Other local buyers follow: Lucien Le Moine, the haute-couture business of Mounir Saouma and Rotem Brakin (29 pieces, 2 million euros), the house of François Martenot, the Burgundy subsidiary of the Alsatian group Helfrich (66 pieces, 1, 6 million euros), and Version Vin, wine agent and distributor in Beaune (1 million euros, 24 rooms).

These primeur wines, freshly vinified by the Hospices de Beaune estate, will have to finish their aging for 18 to 24 months at a Burgundy merchant before they can be sold on the market. At prices, once again, records…

Wine tourism is developing at high speed in Burgundy. While the opening of the Cité des Climats et Vins de Bourgogne is taking shape, the estates, for their part, are developing places conducive to discovery and tasting. Our selection of new addresses:

The Prosper. The Château de Saint-Aubin, owned by Prosper Maufoux, was completely renovated by the Piffaut family in 2021. The Château is located in the heart of the village of the same name and overlooks a vineyard. Below, the Prosper restaurant has just opened. It invites you to “enjoy a refined gastronomic and tourist experience in the Côte de Beaune”. The reins of this new gourmet address have been entrusted to Édouard Mignot and Émilie Rey (Ed’Em, one Michelin star). They imagined a locally inspired menu, in harmony with the Burgundy wines of the House.

The Manor of the plots of Saulx. At the entrance to Meursault coming from Puligny-Montrachet, the Manoir des Parcellaires de Saulx has just opened its doors to welcome guests looking for a visit and a tasting or who simply want to come and drink a glass on the terrace, facing the Burgundy vineyard. Open Wednesday to Saturday from 10:30 a.m. to 7:00 p.m., the Manoir des Parcellaires de Saulx offers a shop where wines from the Domaine de La Commaraine, the Parcellaires de Saulx and the Domaine Belleville are sold with more than 40 Burgundy appellations, from villages to large raw. But also a tasting cellar and a superb terrace overlooking the surrounding vineyards.

Le Marsannay. This is the name of the Marsannay-la-Côte winegrowers’ cellar, which opened this summer 2022, in the village’s former tourist office. The place acts as both a wine shop and a wine bar. There are wines from the Marsannay appellation (nearly 108 references), the northernmost of the Côte de Nuits, which comes in reds, whites and rosés.
The harvest has been completed since the end of September in Burgundy, and the 2022 vintage has plenty to delight the sector. Here are 5 reasons to rejoice:

Quantities

The prayers of the winegrowers have been answered! After a very thin 2021 vintage, stocks were falling dangerously in a very popular Burgundy, yields were needed again. It’s done. “The 2022 vintage creates a surprise, combining quality and quantity”, declared the BIVB (Bureau Interprofessionnel des Vins de Bourgogne) at the end of the harvest. The exact yields are not known, but according to the winegrowers, we are almost everywhere approaching the authorized yields. Which will make 2022 the most generous year since 2018.

Maturity

A hot year obliges: the Chardonnays and Pinot Noirs matured well throughout the season. If we add to this the various episodes of summer drought, which concentrated the juice in the berries, we are heading straight for a profile of solar wines, close to 2019 or 2020, but very far from 2021. In the vats, this results in dense and fragrant whites, and structured reds, with intense aromatics. Of course, we have to wait for the end of the vinification to find out more. “In red, the qualitative potential of phenolic compounds is excellent, suggesting the possibility of a
vintage for laying down. In red as in white, the musts are very aromatic and the start of fermentation is very fast”, indicates the BIVB.

The Freshness

Cherry on the pinot: despite the strong sun this year, the juices have kept a certain freshness. Thus, the degrees of reds and whites rarely exceed 13% alcohol. The acidities, necessary for the balance of the wines and their aging potential, would also be present.

Health status

“Ideal”, “irreproachable”… The winegrowers do not fail to emphasize the excellent sanitary condition of the grapes this year. A classic, in a sunny year with very low rainfall. Mildew was non-existent, and powdery mildew practically absent from the vines this year. As for gray rot, or botrytis, which usually develops at the end of the season, we have not heard of it. It must be said that the weather remained excellent until the end, even in the middle of the harvest. Good news, because the absence of diseases in the vineyard reduces the risk of faults in the wines.

The good humor of the winegrowers

Burgundy winegrowers are finally smiling again. The year 2021, hit by devastating frosts then by incessant rains as well as illnesses, had put wine professionals on their knees, some even thinking of stopping the profession. For the particular case of organic winegrowers, 2022 is also very good news: the vintage encourages labeled estates to continue in this direction, and has convinced others to embark on the conversion.

For most of the other vineyards, the 2022 harvest has also brought its share of good news, and France once again becomes the second largest wine producing country in the world this year.

In "L'épopée des vignerons", France 3 pays tribute to this profession, which is a little apart in the French imagination. Thus, its director, Emmanuelle Nobécourt, has chosen to tell the story of France through this profession, from the beginnings of the vine during antiquity to the current challenges of climate change.

Stop in Beaune and in the Maranges

We discover the extreme difficulty of physical work before its mechanization; the mass production of the industrial age; the destruction and reconstruction of whole sections of the vineyard during the wars. All illustrated by impressive archives and tasty testimonials from experienced winemakers. From Languedoc to the Loire and from Bordeaux to Alsace, the director gives the floor to the great names of French wine. On the Burgundy side, the documentary gives pride of place to the magnificent vineyards of the Maranges, and stops in Beaune to collect the testimony of the Drouhin family, which evokes the incredible story of a resistant grandfather. Anecdotes that can be found from one vineyard to another, all forming a beautiful tribute to the work and courage behind our favorite bottles. The epic of the winegrowers: September 7, 2022 at 9:10 pm on France 3.

The 2022 harvest began very early in Burgundy, from the week of August 15 for the earliest crémant plots of the Mâconnais. The harvest of these future sparkling wines continues until the end of the month. As for still wines, some Pinot Noir are starting to join the vats in the Mâconnais, but the bulk of the harvest will take place from August 29 in Côte Chalonnaise, Côte de Beaune and Côte de Nuits, and from September 5 to 10 in Chablisien. The operation will continue until the last weeks of September for the later plots.

Healthy grapes and beautiful balances

Early dates, but later than expected. In July, it was thought that the bulk of the Burgundy grapes would be cut at the end of August. A forecast thwarted by the strong heat and the lack of water, which have "blocked" the vine: the maturation has slowed down, to resume only with the arrival of the rains of the third week of August. Anyway, the winemakers are smiling. All the lights are green this year: the grapes are healthy, having barely suffered frost and hail, let alone diseases. And yields look good, despite some drought-related losses of quantity. Finally, the entire region expects optimal quality. The first juice analyses announce interesting balances, with a power – hot vintage obliges – well counterbalanced by a very present acidity, bringing freshness. We will have to wait for the vinifications to know more. But one thing is certain: there is under the ranks enough to turn the sad page of 2021.
