As incredible as it may seem, the harvest has already started in Burgundy.

The date of August 15 is consistent with the logic of 100 days after flowering, but it is not as simple as that, and wine producers finally relied on late August/ early September, especially because of the drought that creates water stress in the vineyard and prevents proper ripening, although the amounts of sugar are (largely) sufficient.

…And so the 2020 harvest in Burgundy will start well at the end of the month, with some exceptions. Among them the Crémants, which are traditionally harvested earlier because the level of sugar sought at harvest is lower.

This is how on the Côté de Rully in Côte Chalonnaise teams of harvesters were seen from the weekend of August 15, without this meaning a real start of the harvest campaign.

The fact remains that this 2020 vintage will be very early, it remains exceptional to harvest in August in this region, even if the scorching episodes are now regular.

…It was time to deconfine!

On the one hand, visits to buy Burgundy wines to burgundy wine estates by individuals were completely absent for nearly 2 months.

On the other hand the restaurants being at a standstill, they have of course stopped their wine orders .

Secondly, export sales were very limited, for the same reasons.

The particularity of Burgundy compared to French wine producers? Burgundy winegrowers are mainly composed of small family estates (less than 10 hectares on average) whose wine marketing is mainly based on the 3 circuits mentioned above, or some of the 3. Apart from the few merchants in the region (Bouchard, Boisset) that have other means, such as mass distribution for example, it means almost no income during this period, while the work otherwise remains sustained, the vine being growing in this beautiful spring season. Sales to estates will now be able to resume from Monday, May 11, as well as shipments to individuals and wine merchants On the other hand still not to hotels and restaurants… unfortunately for everyone! It was time to restart, cash flow is at an all-time low and declining sales threaten the very existence of many small farms. Do not hesitate to also turn to mail order and internet sales to support Burgundy wine producers!

Only 2 weeks left before the famous wine sale of the Hospices de Beaune 2019 ! It takes place this year as every year on the 3rd weekend of November, that is to say this year 2019 between 15 and 17 November, in Beaune.

What is the Hospices de Beaune charity sale?

The vineyards of the Hôtel-Dieu estate are the result of historical donations from patrons and raise funds for the charitable works of the Hospices de Beaune. In addition, since the end of the Second World War, the Hospices have supported other aid associations every year. They donate to these causes the profits from the sale of a piece of wine, called " Presidents' Coin ". Its auction is the highlight of the sale. Burgundy traders play the role of matchmakers for the buyers of this auction. They will take care of the ageing of the wines of these buyers until bottling, 1 year and a half after the actual sale. Personalities are invited to animate and sponsor the sale. This year the sale promises to be colorful since it is Gérard Depardieu who will be one of the sponsors, along with Tony Parker, Ophélie Meunier and François-Xavier Demaison. …Except that Depardieu is used to false plans, he was already supposed to participate in 2012 but he probably forgot to come…There are chances that it will be the same this year, not reliable the Gégé, even if his love of wine is no longer to be demonstrated. Many other events are offered during these three days of celebration in Beaune, including many tastings. A great opportunity to discover or rediscover a beautiful city and especially to have many taste pleasures!

While the harvest ends in Burgundy, the producers count the bunches: little harvest, for once the number 9 is not synonymous with full success. As is often the case of a small harvest, the quality is clearly at the rendezvous. The pre-harvest anxiety has given way to a very meagre estimate of stocks. If at the national level the decrease is estimated at about -12% of volume compared to 2018, in Burgundy it will probably approach -20%. Whose fault is it? Has a delicate spring on the one hand but also and especially of course because of the severe drought that left the eastern part of the France without any drop of water for almost 3 months. The grains of reasons dried on their feet and were sorely lacking in water supply. If the vine does not need a lot of water, when it lacks it begins to stress and the grape will start a period of tension that will affect its quality. The harvest is now over and the producers (a little) reassured: the volumes are in serious decline but the quality is at the rendezvous. South of the Côte de Beaune, the decreases range from -30 to -50% depending on the plot, which is considerable. Other areas of vines in Burgundy are experiencing smaller declines, of the order of -5 to -15%. Obviously the acidities are relatively low, but if we remember the 2003 vintage it did not pose any problem for the evolution of Burgundy wines and their ageing. it is of course desirable that the climate outlook settles down and that the next summer in 2020 brings more water, for wine of course, but also probably in general.

Ageing in oak barrels for wine is an exception: on average in the world only 1% of wines are aged in barrels. In France it is three times more, but it is obviously still very minority. Some of the most renowned regions use the Barrel in a much more marked way, such as Bordeaux or Burgundy.
This is for several reasons: not all wines accept this type of ageing, and of course the use of noble wooden barrels will outbid the price of the wine, so it must be wines of a good level whose selling price can justify the acquisition of barrels, usually oak.

What is the point of using wooden barrels for wine ageing?

On the one hand, the gas exchanges will not be the same between the wine and the outside with wood compared to tanks made of inert materials such as stainless steel, cement or fiberglass;

On the other hand, aging in oak barrels brings complementary aromas to the wine, which can be very sought after: vanilla, brioche, butter, coffee, roasted notes… it also works very well with some grape varieties, including Chardonnay and Pinot Noir (mainly used in Burgundy).

And among the interests, the wood of the oak contains tannins that can also bring a complement of structure to the wine. Wood can also be responsible for a renewed flexibility and roundness.

Why not systematically use barrels to age the wine?

First, not all wines have the material to accept aging in barrels. wines that are relatively simple in aromatic terms and have little structure will completely give way to the barrel and will therefore be denatured. In the same idea, in the first years after ageing the woody will be relatively marked in the wine. Wines that are drunk rather young will generally be entitled to aging in vats, which precisely preserves freshness.

On the other hand, the barrel is to be handled with care and sparingly: a barrel already used will mark the wine much less than a new barrel. The winemakers will therefore create blends that will use several parts, some new, others with a year of use, others up to 3 years or more. Size will also be a criterion, the smaller the barrel, the more it will have a significant impact on the wine. There are barrels with a capacity of 228 liters (the most common in Burgundy), but also 600 liters, and even barrels that can hold several thousand liters and that will be kept for many years (see the types of barrels and capacity below).

When the winemaker buys new barrels, he will also ask for very precise manufactures from his cooper: a true artist of wood, his mode of realization will determine the result: a soft and slow heating will give subtle and delicate aromas, while a stronger heating will accentuate the grilled and roasted side. The quality of the wood species will also play a role, the most prestigious oaks being from the forests of Aisne or Limousin in France.

It is a real partnership that is played between winemaker and cooper and that will be decisive for the final result!
